French Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja produced one of the biggest results of the Chennai Grand Masters 2026 so far by defeating reigning world champion D Gukesh in the second round of the tournament in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Friday. The French star's impressive victory made him the sole leader of India's most prestigious classical chess event with two wins from as many games.
Firouzja, who had already begun his campaign with a victory over Indian Grandmaster M Pranesh in the opening round, continued his unbeaten run by overcoming Gukesh in a tense and highly competitive contest. The result handed the Indian world champion an early setback while reinforcing Firouzja's credentials as one of the strongest contenders for the title.
The clash between Firouzja and Gukesh lived up to expectations, with both players engaging in a long strategic battle that lasted 69 moves. The game featured careful positional manoeuvring, tactical precision and sustained concentration from both grandmasters. Despite Gukesh's determined resistance, Firouzja maintained control during the crucial stages of the encounter and eventually converted his advantage into a memorable victory.
