The serene outskirts of Guwahati at Kamarkuchi became a place of collective grief as Assam bid farewell to its iconic singer, Zubeen Garg. His body, adorned with reverence, was brought to a flower-decked platform under a white canopy, where his last rites were performed with full state honours. The air resonated with Vedic hymns chanted by priests and the heartfelt cries of “Long Live Zubeen” and “Jai Zubeen da” from mourners, many perched on surrounding hills.
A somber crowd, including family, fans, and dignitaries, gathered to pay their respects. Assam Police personnel, serving as pallbearers, carried Zubeen’s casket and offered a gun salute before the cremation. The singer’s wife, Garima, and family members offered poignant tributes.
Prominent figures like Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal, Kiren Rijiju, and Pabitra Margherita, alongside Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary were present. In a touching gesture, Sonowal, Margherita, Sarma, and opposition leader Debabrata Saikia knelt to honor the legend, laying floral wreaths on his coffin.

The atmosphere echoed with Zubeen’s own wish, as mourners sang Mayabini Ratir Buku, a song he had chosen for his farewell. His final journey began earlier that day from the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, following a second post-mortem at Gauhati Medical College Hospital.
Zubeen Garg, a cultural icon whose music touched millions, leaves behind a legacy etched in the hearts of Assam and beyond. As the flames rose, so did the voices of a grieving state, celebrating a life that will forever resonate through his timeless melodies.
