In a major political development, NDA legislature party leader Y Khemchand Singh formally staked a claim to form the Manipur government on Wednesday, signaling a potential end to the state’s prolonged President’s rule. The claim was made in the presence of Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, NDA representatives, and key BJP leaders, including Tarun Chugh and Sambit Patra.
Singh, 62, was recently elected leader of the BJP legislature party in Manipur during a meeting in New Delhi attended by 35 of the 37 party MLAs. The NDA also convened with MLAs from allied parties, including the National People’s Party (NPP), Naga People’s Front (NPF), and three Independents, to endorse Singh as the legislature party leader and Nemcha Kipgen as deputy leader.
The NDA delegation, which included two MLAs from the Kuki-Zo majority districts of Churachandpur and Pherzawl, emphasized the formation of a “popular government” that prioritizes peace and development. Singh expressed confidence that the new Council of Ministers will work toward a “Viksit Bharat, Viksit Manipur,” focusing on inclusive governance despite the challenges ahead.

Manipur has been under President’s rule since February 2025, following a surge in ethnic violence triggered by a tribal solidarity march in May 2023. Clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities have left at least 260 people dead, including civilians and security personnel, and displaced thousands. The formation of a stable state government is expected to address security and governance concerns in the conflict-affected regions.
Singh highlighted that the NDA government’s priorities will include peace-building, economic development, and addressing ethnic tensions. He thanked party members and allies for their trust and pledged a transparent and effective administration aimed at long-term stability in Manipur.
The political move comes at a critical juncture, with observers noting that the NDA government’s success will hinge on its ability to manage ethnic reconciliation and deliver rapid administrative solutions. The upcoming oath-taking ceremony is expected to mark the formal start of Manipur’s new political chapter.
