In a shocking incident, the body of a young woman was discovered stuffed inside a blue drum near the DCW over bridge in Patiala on Wednesday, prompting Punjab Police to launch a murder investigation. The gruesome find came after authorities received an alert about a drum containing human remains. Forensic teams were immediately summoned to the site for examination, and the body was later shifted to the mortuary. This case has sent ripples of concern across the region as police work to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death.
The victim was identified as Neha, aged over 20, daughter of Sant Lal, through distinctive tattoos found on her body. Station House Officer Gurpreet Singh stated that the tattoos played a crucial role in establishing her identity during the on-spot examination. Her family, originally from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh but residing in Patiala, was contacted by authorities. They confirmed that Neha had been missing for several days and that a missing persons report had already been filed at the local police station.
Police officials have initiated a thorough probe into the suspected murder, collecting evidence from the scene and questioning potential witnesses. The family’s statement has provided initial leads, though the motive behind the crime remains unclear at this stage. Authorities are examining CCTV footage from the area around the DCW over bridge and are appealing to the public for any information that could assist the investigation. The body has been preserved for further post-mortem analysis to determine the exact cause and time of death.

This incident has drawn parallels to a recent spree of similar “blue drum murders” reported across India in the past year. In Thane earlier this month, a woman was arrested for allegedly killing her lover with her brother’s help and disposing of the body in a blue drum. In Lucknow in February, a 21-year-old student was accused of shooting his father and stuffing the dismembered remains in a blue drum following a family dispute over career choices.
The pattern gained national attention after the 2025 Meerut case, where a merchant navy personnel was allegedly killed by his wife and her lover, with the body dismembered and sealed in a concrete-filled blue drum. Law enforcement agencies in various states have expressed concern over the recurring use of such disposal methods in violent crimes. Police in Patiala are coordinating with other jurisdictions to check for any possible links while treating this as an independent case for now.
As the investigation progresses, residents of Patiala have voiced alarm over the safety of women in the area. Authorities have assured that every effort will be made to bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly. The case highlights ongoing challenges in tackling brutal crimes involving body disposal and the importance of timely missing person reports in aiding quick identification and resolution.
