A 39-year-old woman, Praveena, succumbed to her injuries on Thursday morning after being set ablaze by a man, Jijesh, in her home in Uruvanchal, near Kuttiyattor, Kerala. The horrific incident occurred on Wednesday when Jijesh, known to Praveena, trespassed into her residence, poured petrol on her, and set her on fire, leaving her with over 70% burns.
Praveena was rushed to Kannur Government Medical College Hospital in Pariyaram but could not be saved. Jijesh, who also sustained severe burns, remains hospitalized. The attack took place in the presence of Praveena’s father-in-law, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law’s children, while her husband, Ajeesh, is abroad.
According to police, Jijesh initially approached the house asking for water before entering the kitchen where Praveena was seated. He then doused her with petrol and ignited her. Neighbors, alerted by Praveena’s screams, extinguished the flames and ensured she was taken to the hospital.

Mayyil police registered a case against Jijesh under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for house-trespass and attempted murder. Following Praveena’s death, authorities plan to charge him with murder. A preliminary investigation confirmed that Jijesh and Praveena were acquainted, but the motive behind the brutal act remains unclear.
The tragedy has shocked the local community, with neighbors and police piecing together the events leading to this devastating loss. Further investigations are underway to uncover the reasons behind Jijesh’s actions as Kerala mourns the loss of Praveena.
