A container truck carrying fish overturned on the Pune–Mumbai Motorway near Khandala early Friday, triggering a major traffic jam and prompting emergency teams to launch a quick response operation to clear the road. Authorities said the accident occurred near the Amrutanjan Bridge stretch of the highway, a busy corridor connecting Pune and Mumbai.
According to police officials, the truck was travelling toward Mumbai when it suddenly overturned on the motorway. Initial assessments suggest the accident may have been caused by a brake failure, which led the driver to lose control of the heavy vehicle. The overturned truck blocked a portion of the highway, resulting in long queues of vehicles during the early hours.
Emergency response teams quickly reached the accident site to manage the situation and restore traffic movement. Personnel from the Highway Safety Patrol, local police units, IRB patrolling teams, Delta Force, and the Mrutyunjay Devdoot emergency response system were deployed to the area. Authorities began clearing the spilt cargo and moving the damaged truck from the roadway to prevent further congestion.

Swapnil Patil, assistant police inspector, said the accident occurred around 6:25 a.m. near the Amrutanjan Bridge section of the motorway. The driver and cleaner of the truck sustained minor injuries during the incident. One of them was transported for further medical treatment to the Khopoli Municipal Council Hospital using an IRB ambulance.
Traffic authorities temporarily diverted vehicles through the old highway route while the damaged vehicle and cargo were being removed. Officials said this step helped ease congestion and allowed traffic to continue moving while the motorway lane remained partially blocked.
After the debris and the overturned truck were cleared from the road, traffic movement on the motorway gradually returned to normal. Police officials urged motorists to remain cautious while driving through the ghat sections of the highway, especially with heavy vehicles, as mechanical failures and sharp turns can increase the risk of accidents on the busy corridor.
