Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder and actor-turned-politician Vijay was greeted with an enthusiastic reception by party workers and supporters in Tiruchirappalli on Saturday, marking the launch of his campaign for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Arriving from Chennai via chartered flight, Vijay was met with fervent crowds at the airport, where supporters, including women, breached barricades to catch a glimpse of their leader, waving TVK flags and donning party-themed headgear.
Vijay’s custom-built campaign bus, adorned with images of iconic leaders and the slogan “I am coming”, moved slowly through the throngs as he acknowledged the crowd from inside. Supporters, some carrying his photographs, followed on two-wheelers and in cars, creating a festive atmosphere. The event marks Vijay’s first statewide political tour since founding TVK in February 2024, signalling his ambition to challenge established parties like the DMK and BJP.
The rally, held under strict police oversight with over 20 conditions imposed, is part of a broader campaign covering Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, and Perambalur districts. Vijay, declared TVK’s chief ministerial candidate, is expected to criticise the ruling DMK and BJP, leveraging his massive fanbase and digital presence to rally support ahead of the 2026 polls.
