The Election Commission announced that the election for India’s Vice President will take place on September 9, following the resignation of incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21. The notification will be issued on August 7, with August 21 as the deadline for filing nominations. If needed, polling will occur from 10 am to 5 pm in room F-101, Vasudha, Parliament House, with results declared the same day.
The Rajya Sabha Secretary General has been appointed as the Returning Officer, assisted by two Rajya Sabha Secretariat officials. The electoral college comprises 782 members: 233 elected and 12 nominated Rajya Sabha members, and 543 Lok Sabha members, with five Rajya Sabha and one Lok Sabha seat vacant. The ruling NDA, with support from 422 members (293 in Lok Sabha, 129 in Rajya Sabha), holds a clear advantage, requiring 391 votes to win.
Eligible candidates must be Indian citizens, over 35, and qualified for Rajya Sabha membership, but cannot hold any office of profit under the government. The election follows a proportional representation system with a single transferable vote and secret ballot, as mandated by Article 66(1) of the Constitution. The Vice President, India’s second-highest constitutional office, serves a five-year term but may remain in office until a successor is elected.
