An invasive ant species known as the Asian needle ant is spreading across multiple parts of the United States, prompting concern among officials and public health experts. The species, originally native to China, has now been detected in at least 20 US states, including Florida, Georgia, Texas, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin, according to reports citing The New York Post.

The Asian needle ant is a small insect, typically dark brown to black in colour, measuring less than one-fifth of an inch. Despite its size, it has drawn attention due to its painful sting and its growing geographic spread. Although it was first identified in the United States more than 90 years ago, experts say its population has surged significantly in recent years, allowing it to establish a stronger presence across multiple regions.

Unlike many other invasive ant species, the Asian needle ant does not build visible anthills. Instead, it prefers concealed environments such as leaf litter, rotting wood, and dense wooded areas. This behaviour makes it harder to detect, increasing the likelihood of accidental human contact, particularly for individuals working outdoors or spending time in forested environments.

Health experts warn that the ant’s sting can cause intense, sharp pain that may last for several hours and can recur intermittently. In some cases, pain may spread beyond the initial sting site. While the species is not typically aggressive and only stings when threatened, its sting can pose serious risks for individuals with allergies, potentially triggering anaphylaxis—a severe and life-threatening reaction. The stinger is also strong enough to penetrate clothing, increasing exposure risk.

Entomologists have compared the sensation of the sting to a sudden needle-like injection into the skin, describing it as sharp and highly localized. Despite its painful effects, experts emphasize that the species does not behave aggressively like fire ants and does not currently represent a widespread public health emergency. However, caution is still advised, particularly in areas where the ants are known to be present.

Authorities and researchers recommend that outdoor workers and residents in affected areas take preventive measures such as wearing protective clothing, including gloves, and avoiding direct contact if the ants are encountered. Officials also stress the importance of awareness, as early identification and caution can help reduce the risk of painful stings and allergic reactions.While the Asian needle ant continues to expand its range, experts are monitoring its spread closely to assess long-term ecological and health impacts across the United States.
