A video purportedly showing an F-15 fighter jet chasing an Iranian Shahed-136 drone over Iraqi airspace has gone viral on social media amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The footage, widely shared by Iran-aligned accounts, appears to capture an aerial pursuit followed by a large explosion on the ground, though its authenticity has not been independently verified.
According to claims circulating online, the drone evaded interception by the US aircraft before striking a target on the ground. Social media posts suggested that at least two drones were involved and highlighted the cost disparity between the high-end fighter jet and the relatively inexpensive unmanned aerial systems. However, neither the United States Department of Defence nor allied forces have officially confirmed the incident.
The video is reportedly linked to a series of drone strikes targeting a British-owned motor oil facility in Erbil, a key city in northern Iraq’s Kurdistan region. The facility, associated with a Castrol oil plant operated by the Sardar Group, was said to have been hit multiple times, triggering a massive fire and sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky.

The reported attack comes against the backdrop of rising regional instability following the outbreak of conflict involving Iran, the United States, and its allies. Iraq, which maintains strategic ties with both Washington and Tehran, has increasingly found itself caught in the crossfire, with various armed groups and factions operating within its territory.
In recent developments, Iraqi authorities have allowed certain paramilitary groups, including factions within the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), to respond in self-defence to perceived threats while also warning against unauthorised attacks on foreign interests. Several bases linked to US forces and allied entities have reportedly been targeted in recent weeks, further complicating the security situation.
As tensions continue to rise, the lack of official confirmation regarding the viral video underscores the challenges of verifying information in conflict zones. The incident, if confirmed, could signal a new phase of asymmetric warfare, where relatively low-cost drone technology poses increasing challenges to conventional military systems like the F-15 fighter jet.
