US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited the Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar on Monday as part of a day-long visit to the historic city. Gor led a 28-member American delegation comprising senators, senior government officials and foreign policy scholars. The delegation also visited the Partition Museum as part of its itinerary covering Amritsar's religious, historical and cultural landmarks.

Gor paid obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib, the holiest shrine of Sikhism, where he was welcomed by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee President Harjinder Singh Dhami and Acting Jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj. Members of the delegation covered their heads and bowed before the Guru Granth Sahib. SGPC officials received the ambassador and other members of the delegation according to Sikh traditions.

During his interaction with Sikh religious leaders, Gor discussed matters concerning the Sikh community, including the principle of human equality and issues relating to Sikhs in the United States. According to the report, Gor also told Sikh leaders that it was his second visit to the Golden Temple, having previously visited the shrine with his parents.

The delegation later visited Jallianwala Bagh, the memorial associated with the April 13, 1919 massacre in which British troops opened fire on a gathering. The itinerary also included the Partition Museum, which documents the experiences of people displaced during the 1947 Partition. The visits formed part of the delegation's engagement with Amritsar's religious and historical heritage.

A brief demonstration took place outside the Golden Temple's main entrance during Gor's visit, with Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) Acting President Emaan Singh Mann and his supporters raising slogans. Security arrangements were put in place by the local administration and police, including traffic management along routes connecting the city's major religious and historical sites. The visit also provided an opportunity for the US delegation to engage with Sikh religious leadership.
