A 40-year-old woman was found murdered and partially disrobed in a maize field in Tahsipur Thatia village, Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday morning, police said.
Senior district police official Vinod Kumar reported that the body, discovered by farmer Ramvilas, bore facial and bodily injuries indicative of physical assault, with blood stains at two spots and broken bangles suggesting a violent struggle.
The victim’s saree was missing, though her blouse and petticoat remained, hinting at an attempt to disrobe her. Villagers noted possible signs of forcibly removed earrings, but Kumar clarified that robbery as a motive remains unconfirmed.

A forensic team collected evidence, and a post-mortem is underway to determine if sexual assault preceded the murder.
The Thatia police, led by Kumar, are investigating all angles, including family disputes or property conflicts, with no motive yet established.
The case has drawn attention in an area recently marked by a high-profile honour killing, where Mahendra Jatav confessed to murdering his teenage daughter to frame her lover, disposing of her body with accomplices for Rs 70,000.
Kannauj Police, via X, confirmed the body’s transfer for post-mortem and ongoing evidence collection with forensic and dog squad teams. Superintendent Vinod Kumar and other officials inspected the site.
The investigation continues amid heightened local concern over violent crimes against women in the region.
