Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday dismissed claims made by Uttar Pradesh Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar that the party was heading for a major split, asserting instead that the organisation remains united and politically strong. Rajbhar had earlier in the day alleged that the Samajwadi Party was on the verge of a significant internal division. He further claimed that SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav had sent a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, though he did not disclose the contents of the alleged communication.
The remarks triggered a sharp response from the SP leadership. Reacting to the claims, Akhilesh Yadav rejected the suggestion of any internal crisis and mocked the remarks, saying, “Dana aur gana kab tak chalega yeh afsana,” in a veiled jibe at what he described as politically motivated narratives. He maintained that the party had overcome multiple challenges in the past and continued to function as a cohesive organisation.
The SP chief accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to destabilise opposition parties through inducements and pressure tactics. He alleged that several legislators and leaders had previously been taken away from the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, suggesting that defections were often driven by political incentives or fear rather than ideological differences. Yadav further stated that political parties needed committed and courageous members if they were to effectively challenge the BJP.

He reiterated that the SP remained committed to its organisational unity and would not engage in efforts to engineer defections from rival parties. Referring to earlier comments made during an interaction with the media, Akhilesh Yadav said he had already made it clear that he would not attempt to break the BJP or encourage defections. However, he added that it was the ruling party that had been active in attracting leaders from opposition ranks, while also suggesting that internal discontent existed within the BJP itself.
Meanwhile, SP MP Rajeev Rai also dismissed Rajbhar’s claims, describing them as baseless and politically motivated. He criticised the remarks in strong language, suggesting they lacked seriousness and were intended to create unnecessary controversy rather than reflect any factual political development within the party. The exchange highlights ongoing political tensions in Uttar Pradesh, where accusations of defections and party instability continue to be a recurring feature of the rivalry between major political formations.
