Union Minister Sanjay Kumar on Monday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of “encouraging infiltration” into the state for what he described as “vote bank politics,” sparking fresh controversy amid ongoing debates over border security and migrant populations.
Speaking at a press briefing, Kumar alleged that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government has been turning a blind eye to illegal immigration from neighboring Bangladesh, claiming that these actions are politically motivated to consolidate voter support in certain constituencies. He argued that the alleged infiltration poses security and administrative challenges for the state.
The minister also called for stricter enforcement of border controls and verification measures, asserting that unchecked migration could affect law and order and distort electoral outcomes. He stressed that central authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure compliance with existing regulations.

TMC leaders have strongly denied the allegations, terming them “baseless” and politically motivated. Party spokespersons said that the state government has consistently adhered to legal frameworks regarding residency and citizenship verification, and accused the central leadership of misrepresenting facts for electoral gain.
Analysts note that such statements could heighten political polarization in West Bengal, a state already known for tense electoral battles and communal sensitivities. Migration and citizenship issues have historically been potent political tools in the region, influencing voter mobilization and party strategies.
As the controversy unfolds, both state and central authorities are expected to come under scrutiny, with political observers closely watching how these allegations may shape the discourse ahead of upcoming elections. The debate underscores the persistent friction between federal oversight and state governance in matters of security and demographic management.
