The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that recent military strikes occurred near Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant but that the operational facility itself was not damaged and continues to function normally. The agency’s assessment follows satellite analysis and information provided by Iranian authorities, underscoring that, despite multiple impacts close to the site, there has been no reported damage to critical nuclear infrastructure or any increase in radiation levels.
IAEA Director‑General Rafael Grossi expressed “deep concern” over the strikes near the nuclear facility, reiterating that nuclear power plant sites and their surrounding areas must never be targeted during military operations. The agency emphasized the potential risks posed by such incidents, even in the absence of direct damage, and called for maximum military restraint to avoid a catastrophic radiological accident.
Iran’s state media and official sources reported that a projectile struck near the plant on April 4, resulting in the death of one member of the plant’s physical protection staff and damage to an auxiliary building from shockwaves and debris. Despite this, Iranian authorities reaffirmed that the plant’s main reactor and critical systems remain unaffected and that there has been no disruption to its regular operations.

The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, located on the country’s Persian Gulf coast, is Iran’s only operational nuclear power station. Its proximity to recent hostilities has raised international alarm, as even peripheral attacks near nuclear sites could result in severe environmental and humanitarian consequences if a direct hit were to occur. Experts warn such an outcome could affect neighboring countries via radioactive release or water contamination.
Tensions in the region have been escalating amid broader conflict involving US‑Israeli military strikes against Iranian infrastructure, and Iran’s own retaliatory actions. Tehran has lodged complaints with the United Nations, arguing that the attacks on civilian nuclear facilities contravene international law and increase the risk of radiological disaster. Iranian officials have called on global bodies to take stronger action to prevent further incidents around nuclear sites.
Despite these developments, the IAEA’s verification that the Bushehr plant remains undamaged provides a measure of reassurance regarding nuclear safety — at least for now. However, the situation continues to be monitored closely by international watchdogs and governments due to the potential for rapid escalation and the grave implications of any future damage to nuclear infrastructure.
