Ukraine’s Ambassador to India, Oleksandr Polishchuk, firmly declared that Kyiv will neither surrender nor accept territorial concessions in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Speaking to PTI Videos in New Delhi, Polishchuk emphasized Ukraine’s unwavering resolve to protect its sovereignty against Moscow’s demands, underscoring the nation’s commitment to maintaining its territorial integrity despite intense pressure from Russia. His remarks come amidst heightened geopolitical tensions, including recent U.S. tariffs impacting India’s trade dynamics.
Polishchuk criticized Russia’s use of discounted oil trade with India, alleging that President Vladimir Putin is channeling the revenue not toward improving social welfare in Russia but to fuel the war in Ukraine. “Putin benefits from trading with India, but he uses this money to feed the war, not to enhance Russia’s social situation,” the envoy claimed, warning that Russia may face challenges funding social programs by next year if this continues. This statement follows the U.S. imposing a 50% tariff on Indian goods, effective August 27, 2025, including a 25% additional duty tied to India’s purchase of Russian crude oil, which has strained India-U.S. relations under the Trump administration.
The ambassador responded cautiously to comments by U.S. Trade Advisor Peter Navarro, who suggested that “the road to peace runs, at least partly, through New Delhi.” Polishchuk deflected, stating, “That’s a question for the U.S. Embassy, not for me,” maintaining diplomatic neutrality on the U.S.’s perspective. However, he lauded India’s efforts to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict, particularly highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic initiatives. Modi’s visit to Ukraine in August 2023 and his letter to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Ukraine’s National Day were cited as significant gestures of support.

Polishchuk noted the symbolic connection between India and Ukraine, both celebrating their Independence Days in August, as a reflection of their shared commitment to democracy and independence. Expressing optimism about future high-level engagements, he confirmed that an invitation for Zelenskyy to visit India, extended last year, remains pending. “I hope it will happen definitely,” he said, signaling potential for deeper bilateral ties.
As the Russia-Ukraine war persists, Polishchuk’s remarks underscore Ukraine’s resolute stance and appreciation for India’s balanced diplomacy, while navigating complex global pressures, including strained India-U.S. ties over trade and energy policies.
