A late-night outing to watch an IPL match ended in tragedy after two cousins were killed in a suspected hit-and-run accident in Central Delhi on Monday night. The fatal collision took place near the Mahadev Road T-point on Ashoka Road, opposite the PNB Complex in the Parliament Street area, a busy stretch that often witnesses late-night traffic movement. The incident has shocked local residents and sparked fresh concerns over dangerous driving in the city after dark.

The deceased were identified as Yagya Bhatia, 20, a BSc student and resident of Ashok Nagar, and Abhav Bhatia, 14, a school student. According to relatives, the two cousins had gone out for a casual evening and were returning when the accident occurred. Their sudden deaths have left the family devastated, with loved ones struggling to come to terms with the loss of two young lives in a single incident.

Delhi Police said they received a PCR call around 11 pm reporting a serious road accident involving a motorcycle and a goods carrier. Police teams immediately rushed to the spot and found both victims lying unconscious on the road with severe injuries. Emergency responders arranged for their quick transportation to a nearby hospital, where doctors attempted to assess and stabilise them upon arrival.

However, medical officials declared both victims dead on arrival, police said. Preliminary investigations indicate that the goods carrier involved in the collision fled the scene soon after the crash, leading authorities to treat the matter as a suspected hit-and-run case. A criminal case has been registered, and investigators have started gathering evidence related to the movement of the vehicle and the circumstances of the collision.

Police officials said the suspected vehicle has since been identified, and multiple teams are working to trace the driver. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby roads, traffic junctions and commercial establishments, while also recording statements from possible witnesses. The tragedy has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter traffic enforcement, responsible driving behaviour and stronger road safety measures in the national capital.
