US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has clarified that the Trump administration's changes to the H-1B visa programme are not specifically targeted at Indian professionals, amid growing concerns among students and skilled workers over tighter immigration policies. Speaking during an interview, Gor said the ongoing H-1B review is part of a broader overhaul of the US immigration system that covers all visa categories and should not be interpreted as an action directed against India.
His remarks come as thousands of Indian students, technology professionals and H-1B visa holders closely monitor policy changes introduced under the Trump administration. Indians receive the majority of H-1B visas issued each year, making any changes to the programme particularly significant for the country's skilled workforce. The administration has increased scrutiny of legal immigration while pursuing wider reforms aimed at strengthening border security and revising visa procedures.
Addressing concerns over the H-1B process and reports of increased hate crimes in the United States, Gor said the immigration reforms are part of a comprehensive policy review rather than a country-specific initiative. He stated that the administration's objective is to overhaul the immigration system after what it considers years of inadequate border enforcement. According to Gor, the H-1B exercise should be viewed within the broader framework of immigration reform rather than as a measure targeting Indian nationals.

The comments also come against the backdrop of ongoing India-US trade negotiations, which began following the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in Washington in February 2025. While immigration policies continue to be closely watched by Indian professionals and businesses, officials from both countries have maintained that bilateral engagement remains strong across trade, technology and strategic cooperation. The ambassador's remarks are expected to provide reassurance to Indian applicants navigating the evolving US visa landscape.
