Donald Trump said that the United States is currently holding discussions with Iran as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East enters its third week. However, he stated that Iran is still not ready to reach an agreement that could end the war.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump confirmed that some form of diplomacy is taking place between the two countries. When asked whether negotiations were underway to stop the conflict, he replied that the United States was indeed in contact with Iran but suggested that progress toward a peace deal had not yet been achieved.
Trump also expressed uncertainty about making a deal immediately. He said the situation inside Iran is unclear because many members of the country’s leadership have reportedly been killed during recent attacks. Among those reported dead was Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, along with several senior Iranian officials, following the initial wave of U.S.–Israel strikes on Iran in February 2026.

Despite these challenges, Trump claimed that Iranian authorities are interested in negotiating. According to him, Iran “wants to make a deal badly,” though he believes the country has not yet reached the point where it is ready to finalize an agreement to end the conflict.
The war, which began after coordinated military actions involving the United States and Israel earlier this year, has heightened tensions across the Middle East and affected global markets, particularly energy prices and international trade routes. Diplomatic efforts continue as world leaders watch closely to see whether negotiations can eventually lead to a ceasefire or peace agreement.
