US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that authorities are closely monitoring the hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean and expressed hope that the situation is now under control. Trump made the remarks during an impromptu appearance near the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, where he was reviewing a renovation project.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said he had been briefed on the outbreak aboard the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius, which has reported multiple suspected cases of hantavirus during its voyage across the Atlantic. “It’s very much, we hope, under control,” Trump said, adding that health experts and officials were continuing to study the situation and that a detailed report was expected soon.
The outbreak has raised international concern after at least three passengers reportedly died and several others fell ill during the voyage. Health authorities have initiated contact tracing efforts for passengers who had earlier disembarked from the ship, as well as individuals who may have interacted with them during the journey. More than 140 passengers and crew members are believed to still be onboard as the vessel heads toward Spain’s Canary Islands.

According to reports, at least five American passengers from the affected ship have already returned to the United States and are currently under medical observation. Public health agencies are monitoring their condition while attempting to assess the extent of possible exposure linked to the outbreak. Officials have not yet confirmed the total number of suspected infections aboard the vessel.
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious disease primarily transmitted through contact with infected rodents or their droppings. In certain uncommon circumstances, limited person-to-person transmission may occur. However, the World Health Organization has stated that the risk of widespread public transmission remains low because the virus does not spread easily between humans under normal conditions.
The outbreak has prompted heightened health surveillance measures involving multiple countries as the ship continues its journey. Medical authorities and maritime agencies are expected to release further updates regarding passenger safety, containment measures, and the final assessment of the outbreak in the coming days. The incident has also renewed attention on disease monitoring protocols aboard international cruise vessels following several recent global health alerts.
