The Tripura government has appointed “Guardian Ministers” for all eight districts of the state to monitor development activities, improve coordination and ensure effective implementation of government schemes. The move follows similar arrangements introduced in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, where ministers were assigned district-level responsibilities to strengthen administrative oversight.
According to a notification issued by the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, 11 ministers have been given charge of the eight districts. The appointed ministers will regularly review development projects, supervise welfare programmes, coordinate with district administrations and address public grievances to ensure timely execution of government initiatives.
Under the new system, Guardian Ministers will work closely with district officials, elected representatives including MLAs, Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis, along with officials from different government departments. The arrangement is aimed at improving communication between the state government and local administrations while ensuring that development priorities are addressed effectively.

Power and Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath, who is considered the second most senior minister in Chief Minister Manik Saha’s cabinet, has been assigned responsibility for Dhalai district, which has a significant tribal population. Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy has been appointed Guardian Minister for West Tripura district.
Other appointments include Santana Chakma and Sukla Charan Noatia for North Tripura, Kishor Barman and Animesh Debbarma for Gomati, Sudhangshu Das and Brishaketu Debbarma for South Tripura, Sushanta Chowdhury for Unakoti, Tinku Roy for Khowai and Bikash Debbarma for Sepahijala district.
Officials said the initiative is intended to strengthen monitoring mechanisms, speed up the delivery of government schemes and promote balanced development across the state. The government believes closer supervision by ministers will help identify implementation gaps and improve the impact of various welfare and infrastructure programmes.
Political observers said the decision could also be part of the BJP government’s efforts to strengthen grassroots administration ahead of the 2028 Tripura Assembly elections. By increasing ministerial involvement at the district level, the government aims to improve public outreach, enhance accountability and ensure faster execution of development projects.
