Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay is facing criticism from opposition parties after appearing to adopt a more measured position on delimitation during a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, days after the state Assembly passed a resolution opposing the proposed exercise. Vijay had earlier backed a demand to permanently retain the Lok Sabha's existing strength of 543 seats and preserve the current distribution of constituencies among states. However, at the Southern Zonal Council meeting, he instead called for a legislative assurance that no state would lose its percentage share of parliamentary representation because of successful population control. The change in emphasis has triggered accusations that his position has softened.
The controversy follows Vijay's meeting with Amit Shah, his first with the Union Home Minister since becoming Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister. Opposition parties have linked the timing of the meeting to the change in Vijay's language on delimitation. The Tamil Nadu Assembly had on August 12 passed a resolution seeking a permanent freeze on the total number of Lok Sabha seats at 543 and retaining the existing state-wise allocation. The resolution reflected concerns among southern states that a future delimitation based on population could reduce their political representation despite their success in controlling population growth.
At the Southern Zonal Council meeting, however, Vijay did not repeat the specific demand for a 543-seat ceiling. Instead, he argued that the existing percentage share of parliamentary representation enjoyed by each state should be protected. He also urged the Centre to provide a clear legislative guarantee on the matter. The distinction is politically significant because it could allow the overall number of Lok Sabha seats to increase while ensuring that states such as Tamil Nadu do not suffer a reduction in their relative share. His remarks have therefore been interpreted by opponents as a departure from the stronger position adopted by his government in the Assembly.

The DMK sharply criticised Vijay over the issue, with MP Dayanidhi Maran questioning whether Congress leader Rahul Gandhi would call the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister a "traitor" after the alleged change in position. Maran recalled earlier political accusations against the DMK over its stand on delimitation and argued that Vijay had moved from demanding no change in representation to seeking safeguards for a future exercise. The AIADMK also accused the TVK government of performing a political "U-turn", while AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran said the Assembly resolution had been used to divert attention from other issues facing the state.
The delimitation debate is closely linked to concerns over population-based representation. Southern states argue that using population figures for redistributing parliamentary constituencies could disadvantage states that implemented population-control measures more successfully than several northern states. They fear that a larger increase in representation for high-population states could weaken the South's influence in Parliament and potentially affect its share in financial devolution. The Centre, meanwhile, has linked the proposed delimitation exercise with the implementation of women's reservation in Parliament and state legislatures, making the issue a major constitutional and political question.
For now, Vijay's position remains under intense scrutiny, with the TVK's IT wing insisting that the party has not changed its fundamental stand on protecting Tamil Nadu's representation. The Chief Minister's latest formulation, however, has opened a fresh political battle in the state, particularly because it differs in wording from the Assembly resolution passed only days earlier. Whether Vijay ultimately supports a larger Lok Sabha after securing safeguards for southern states, or returns to the demand for maintaining the 543-seat strength, could determine how the controversy develops in the coming weeks.
