Trinamool Congress on Thursday expelled Murshidabad MLA Humayun Kabir from the party hours after he announced plans to lay the foundation of a replica Babri Masjid in Beldanga on December 6, the 32nd anniversary of the original structure’s demolition in Ayodhya. Senior party leader and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim confirmed the suspension, stating that Kabir had been repeatedly cautioned against statements that contradict the party’s secular principles.
Party insiders revealed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was furious with the timing and symbolism of the proposal, viewing it as an attempt to inflame communal passions ahead of future elections. Hakim accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of orchestrating the controversy through proxies, claiming the deliberate choice of December 6 and the name “Babri Masjid” were designed to polarise Bengal along religious lines rather than address genuine developmental needs.
Kabir responded defiantly, withdrawing from Mamata Banerjee’s rally in Murshidabad and informing associates that he will resign from Trinamool Congress on Friday to float his own political outfit. Sources close to the MLA confirmed that construction of the mosque replica will proceed regardless of his changed political status, with necessary local permissions already secured.

The announcement triggered sharp reactions across the political spectrum. West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose warned that any attempt to disturb communal harmony in Murshidabad would face strict action, while BJP state spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo dared Kabir to go ahead, asserting that raising memorials to “invaders” would only invite repetition of the disputes that led to the original Babri Masjid’s fall.
With security forces placed on high alert across Murshidabad district, the December 6 foundation ceremony has emerged as a potential flashpoint that threatens to reopen one of independent India’s most sensitive historical wounds on West Bengal soil.
