Three people, including a woman, were killed after armed assailants attacked a village in Manipur's Kangpokpi district in the early hours of Friday, officials said. The violence occurred at Loibol Khullen village in the Saitu-Gamphazol subdivision and also left several homes damaged in a fire.
According to officials, the attack took place at around 4 am when armed individuals targeted the village. The incident triggered an exchange of fire between rival groups that lasted several minutes, creating panic among residents. Many villagers reportedly fled their homes and sought refuge in nearby forested areas to escape the violence.
Authorities said at least seven houses were gutted in the blaze that accompanied the attack. The extent of property damage is still being assessed, while security forces have been monitoring the situation in the area. The incident has heightened concerns over security in the district, which has witnessed recurring tensions in recent years.

The deceased have been identified as Letkhongam Haokip, Tinmary Haokip and Jangminlal Haokip. Officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack and working to establish the identities of those responsible. No immediate arrests have been reported.
The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body representing Kuki tribes in the state, strongly condemned the killings and demanded a thorough investigation. In a statement, the organisation described the attack as a barbaric act against unarmed civilians and called for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The latest violence underscores the fragile security situation in parts of Manipur, where ethnic tensions and sporadic clashes have continued to pose challenges for law enforcement agencies. Authorities are expected to intensify efforts to restore normalcy and prevent any further escalation in the affected region.
