Three Air India aircraft were damaged at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after ground support equipment was reportedly displaced during sudden rain and strong winds, leading to a collision at Terminal 2. The incident occurred on Saturday amid rapidly changing weather conditions, and the affected aircraft have since been taken out of service for inspection and repairs, according to airport authorities.
Officials from the airport operator stated that the aircraft were parked on the tarmac when ground support equipment belonging to Air India Engineering and IndiGo was moved by strong winds. The equipment reportedly struck three parked Air India narrowbody aircraft, causing varying degrees of damage. The sudden weather shift, marked by rain and gusty winds, is believed to have played a key role in the incident.
The airport operator further noted that no weather warning was issued by Air Traffic Control at the time of the incident, either to airlines or airport authorities. This statement has raised questions regarding real-time communication protocols during fast-changing weather conditions, particularly in large operational hubs like Delhi airport, which handles high traffic volumes daily.

Air India has not issued an official statement on the incident so far. However, sources within the airline indicated that the damage assessment is underway. According to internal estimates, two of the affected aircraft are expected to return to service soon after minor repairs, while the third aircraft may require a longer maintenance period before it can resume operations.
Preliminary reports suggest that other airlines may also have experienced minor impact due to the same weather conditions, although Air India aircraft were the most significantly affected. Aviation experts note that ground handling equipment must be securely parked during adverse weather conditions to prevent such incidents, especially during sudden wind gusts common in monsoon-transition periods.
Authorities are expected to review safety procedures and ground handling protocols to determine how the equipment became displaced during the storm. With the monsoon season intensifying across northern India, aviation safety measures are likely to come under closer scrutiny to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
