A 28-year-old man was killed after being struck by a tractor-trailer while fleeing from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents during an enforcement encounter in St. Augustine, Florida, authorities said. The incident occurred early Tuesday and has become the third reported death in approximately a week linked to encounters involving federal immigration authorities in the United States, raising renewed attention on the risks surrounding immigration enforcement operations.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the incident unfolded shortly before 7 a.m. when a vehicle carrying four occupants stopped in the parking lot of a gas station and convenience store in St. Augustine. During an encounter with officers from ICE and Homeland Security Investigations, all four individuals reportedly fled the area on foot. As they attempted to escape, one of the men ran across a busy roadway and entered the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer. He was struck by the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. Authorities said the truck driver stopped immediately after the collision and attempted to assist the victim until emergency responders arrived.
Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant Dylan Bryan confirmed the sequence of events in an emailed statement, saying the pedestrian was hit while crossing the road during the attempted escape. Officials have not publicly released the identity, nationality, or immigration status of the deceased pending notification of family members. Authorities have also not disclosed whether the three other individuals who fled the scene were later detained or whether any immigration enforcement actions were completed following the incident. The circumstances surrounding the initial encounter between the occupants and federal agents have not been detailed by investigators.

The fatality comes amid increased scrutiny of immigration enforcement operations across the United States. It is the third reported death in connection with encounters involving ICE agents within roughly a week. Earlier incidents in Texas and Maine also resulted in fatalities during interactions with federal immigration authorities. Those cases involved separate shootings and remain under investigation. Although the incidents are unrelated, their close timing has drawn public attention to the potential dangers surrounding enforcement actions and encounters between immigration officers and individuals attempting to evade detention.
Authorities have not suggested any wrongdoing on the part of the tractor-trailer driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Likewise, no allegations have been made against the federal agents involved in the encounter, and officials have not announced whether an internal review will be conducted. The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash, while federal authorities are expected to examine the broader circumstances of the enforcement operation. As the investigation progresses, officials are expected to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the man's death. The incident adds to the ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement practices, public safety, and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies during field operations involving individuals who attempt to flee. Further information is expected to be released once investigators complete their inquiries and notify the deceased man's family.
