In a Texas courtroom that echoed with grief and rage, 19-year-old Luke Garrett Resecker was sentenced to a staggering 65 years behind bars on Tuesday for annihilating an entire Indian-origin family of six while driving under the influence of heavy THC on December 26, 2023, in one of the most heartbreaking road tragedies the state has ever witnessed.
The devastating collision occurred around 4 pm on US Highway 67 when Resecker, then just 17 and high on THC wax, lost control of his Chevy Silverado and ploughed head-on into a Honda Odyssey minivan carrying seven joyful family members returning from a day out at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, instantly killing Rushil Barri (28), Naveena Potabathula (36), her parents Nageswararao (64) and Sitamahalakshmi Ponnada (60), and their two young children Krithik (10) and Nishidha (9).
The sole survivor, Lokesh Potabathula, lost his wife, both children, cousin, and in-laws in the blink of an eye and was left permanently paralysed from the waist down, while Resecker’s own 17-year-old passenger Preston Glass suffered catastrophic brain damage that has left him mentally impaired for life, turning one moment of reckless stupidity into two shattered families.

Inside Resecker’s truck, police found THC wax, a vape pen, and marijuana, with toxicology reports confirming active THC coursing through his system at the time of the crash, proving beyond doubt that he chose to get dangerously high before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle that became a weapon of mass destruction.
Prosecutor Stephanie Miller delivered a gut-wrenching closing statement, naming each victim individually: “Justice for Rushil, justice for Naveena, justice for Nageswararao, justice for Sitamahalakshmi, justice for Krithik, justice for Nishidha, and justice for Lokesh,” before the judge handed down the 65-year sentence, ensuring the teenage killer will spend decades contemplating the irreversible horror his selfish high inflicted on an innocent family who will never come home again.
