A dramatic accident involving a Tesla Model Y unfolded in Chicago on Friday evening after the driver reportedly suffered a medical emergency while driving. The incident occurred around 5 pm on Route 59 near Cantore Road in Naperville. According to local reports, the vehicle first collided with another car before veering off the road. It then struck a tree and immediately caught fire.
Authorities said the 37-year-old driver suddenly became ill while operating the 2025 Tesla Model Y. An off-duty Naperville police officer who witnessed the crash acted swiftly and pulled the driver out of the burning vehicle. Emergency services, including police and fire crews, rushed to the scene following reports of a serious crash and an active vehicle fire. Helicopters were also seen monitoring the situation from above.
Video footage from the scene showed the Tesla badly mangled, with debris scattered across the roadway and shoulder. Thick black smoke could be seen billowing from the vehicle as flames engulfed it. Photos later revealed the car completely burned out, while firefighters continued cooling operations. Emergency responders carefully inspected the wreckage to prevent further flare-ups.

Firefighters used large volumes of water to extinguish the blaze and cool the electric vehicle’s battery system. The Naperville Fire Department deployed a specialised tool known as the “Poseidon Nozzle,” designed specifically to combat electric vehicle battery fires. Officials noted that the device allows water to be delivered directly into battery packs, significantly improving fire suppression. The tool was invented by a Naperville firefighter.
The incident has renewed attention on electric vehicle fire risks, particularly involving Teslas. Videos circulating online show similar instances, including one where a red Tesla catches fire while being driven, forcing the driver to escape quickly. Authorities have not yet confirmed the extent of injuries in the Chicago crash. An official statement is awaited as investigations into the incident continue.
