A massive fire lit up the skies over Tehran on Saturday night after Israeli airstrikes targeted multiple oil depots in and around the Iranian capital, causing widespread destruction and casualties. The strikes ignited huge blazes, sending thick black smoke across the city and into neighbouring areas such as Karaj. Iranian officials confirmed that four people, including two tanker drivers, were killed.
The warplanes struck at least five key fuel facilities, including the Shahran and Aghdasiyeh depots, as well as a petroleum products transport centre. Footage from the city showed fireballs, long columns of smoke, and flames lighting up the night, while explosions shook parts of Tehran. Residents reported streets filled with burning fuel, describing the scene as a “river of fire.” Blackened rainwater, reportedly mixed with oil and soot, fell over the city, further highlighting the scale of the destruction.
Emergency crews worked through the night to contain the fires, which were eventually brought under control. Authorities said fuel distribution was temporarily interrupted as damage assessments continued. Despite the devastation, Iranian officials insisted that the country’s fuel reserves remained secure.

The Israeli military confirmed it had carried out airstrikes on Tehran’s fuel storage facilities to prevent their use by Iran’s military. Israel also issued a warning targeting Iran’s Assembly of Experts, which is responsible for selecting the next supreme leader following the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28.
The airstrikes are part of an ongoing conflict between Israel, the US, and Iran that has escalated since the February 28 offensive, which killed Khamenei and other senior Iranian officials. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have pledged to continue operations for months, with plans to deploy advanced long-range missiles in the coming days.
The regional conflict has spread across the Gulf, with Israeli strikes on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, drone attacks in Saudi Arabia, and Iranian strikes on Kuwait and Bahrain. Since the start of the war, at least 1,200 Iranian civilians have been killed and around 10,000 injured, according to Iran’s health ministry, while Israel has conducted roughly 3,400 strikes against Iranian targets.
