Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said the Tawang Marathon 2026 will serve as a platform to showcase the state's Himalayan landscape, cultural heritage and local hospitality while promoting responsible tourism. Khandu made the remarks while launching the marathon's logo and unveiling its official T-shirt, finisher medal and mascot at an event held at the Chief Minister's Office in Itanagar.
The fourth edition of the high-altitude endurance event is scheduled to be held on October 24. Khandu also inaugurated the marathon's official website and registration platform, marking the beginning of preparations for this year's event. Organised by the Arunachal Pradesh government in close association with the Indian Army, the marathon will bring together civilian runners and defence personnel on a course located at around 10,000 feet above sea level against the backdrop of the Eastern Himalayas.
The 2026 edition is expected to attract more than 4,000 participants, including over 200 elite runners from across India as well as Kenya, Ethiopia and Nepal. Amateur runners and fitness enthusiasts are also expected to participate. Khandu said the identity elements unveiled for the event carry different aspects of Tawang, with the logo reflecting the spirit of the mountains and its people, while the mascot represents the warmth of Tawang.
The marathon's high-altitude course presents a distinctive endurance challenge, with altitude, terrain and weather requiring participants to prepare carefully. Runners have been encouraged to arrive in Tawang two to three days before race day for acclimatisation, bib collection and medical guidance. Preparations also include race operations, medical assistance, hydration and aid stations, with organisers coordinating with local stakeholders to support the event.
Beyond the sporting event, the marathon is expected to contribute to Arunachal Pradesh's growing sports tourism sector. The arrival of runners and their families could create opportunities for local hotels, homestays, transport operators, guides and other businesses. The event will also give visitors an opportunity to experience Tawang's Monpa traditions, historic monastery and local hospitality, connecting the endurance event with the region's wider cultural and tourism offerings.
Khandu invited runners, sports enthusiasts and travellers from India and abroad to participate in the fourth edition and experience Tawang. He also appreciated the organising team, VAS Coreworks LLP, and other stakeholders for their efforts in developing the marathon over the years. Sports Minister Kento Jini joined the event through video conference, while Sports Secretary Abu Tayeng, Special Secretary Akshat Kaushal and Sports Director Tadar Appa were also present.
