A man has been arrested in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district over allegations that he befriended women online and in his neighbourhood, gained their trust, and later engaged them in private video conversations that allegedly led to harassment and the exchange of objectionable content. Police said the accused, who runs a grocery shop in the area, is being investigated for multiple charges related to harassment and electronic misuse. The case has also triggered a political controversy due to disputed claims about his association with a political party.
According to investigators, the accused gradually developed relationships with women living in his locality before initiating private video calls. Authorities suspect that several women may have been targeted through similar methods over time. The case came to light after one of the women ended her relationship with him and shared details of her experience with a journalist, prompting further investigation and a formal complaint to the police.
Following the complaint, police arrested the accused and remanded him to judicial custody. Officials said they have recovered screen recordings and other digital evidence allegedly linked to the video conversations. Investigators are currently analysing electronic devices to determine the extent of contact with other women and whether additional victims may be involved in the case. Police also stated that multiple legal provisions relating to harassment and cyber offences have been invoked.

The case has sparked political debate after conflicting claims emerged regarding the accused’s alleged links to the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). While one police official reportedly described him as a party member without any official position, another stated that he had no connection with the party. The TVK’s Salem unit has strongly denied any association with the accused and warned of legal action against those spreading misinformation.
Political reactions have also followed, with DMK MP Kanimozhi calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations and urging strict action if wrongdoing is established. The controversy comes at a sensitive time in the state, as issues related to women’s safety have remained a major political focus, including recent government initiatives aimed at strengthening protections and improving reporting mechanisms for crimes against women.
