Suspended Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil from Palakkad made his first public appearance since his suspension by walking into the Kerala Assembly on Monday, defying expectations and reigniting controversy. The legislator, who faced allegations of sexual misconduct, had been absent from public life, retreating to his home in Adoor after the Congress party suspended him in August. Despite the suspension, Mamkootathil retains his Assembly seat, and his unexpected return has sparked intense debate within political circles.
Mamkootathil entered the Assembly shortly after the session began, quietly taking a seat on the backbench of the opposition block. Accompanied by Youth Congress district president Nemom Shajeer and a few supporters, his presence went largely unacknowledged by other members, who were engaged in paying tribute to former Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and two others. The muted reaction belied the significance of his return, which followed days of speculation about whether he would attend the session, especially after opposition leader V D Satheesan publicly objected to his presence in the House.
The controversy surrounding Mamkootathil stems from multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, first raised by Malayalam actress Rini Ann George, who accused “a young leader” from a prominent political party of misbehavior. The accusation triggered protests by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the CPI(M). Subsequently, additional complaints emerged from women and a transgender individual, accusing Mamkootathil of similar charges. These allegations led to his suspension from the Congress party and his resignation as Youth Congress state president.

Despite the controversies, Mamkootathil retains significant support within sections of the Congress, particularly among youth leaders, which may have emboldened his decision to return to the Assembly. His appearance has raised questions about his political future and the Congress party’s handling of the situation, with critics arguing that allowing him to continue as an MLA undermines the party’s stance on accountability.
As the Assembly session continues, Mamkootathil’s presence is likely to fuel further discussions about the allegations and the broader implications for political ethics in Kerala. Observers are closely watching how the Congress leadership and opposition respond to this bold move by the embattled MLA.
