The Supreme Court of India issued a notice on November 7, 2025, to star cricketer Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government in response to a petition by his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, seeking a substantial hike in monthly alimony, arguing that the current Rs 4 lakh combined payment is insufficient for their lifestyle needs. Jahan challenged the Calcutta High Court's earlier order, which awarded her Rs 1.5 lakh personally and Rs 2.5 lakh for their daughter's maintenance, contending that Shami's affluent status as a high-earning international player warrants a revision upward.
A bench headed by justices sought responses from both parties within four weeks, marking the latest chapter in the couple's protracted legal battle that has spanned domestic violence allegations, infidelity claims, and financial disputes since their 2018 separation.
Hasin Jahan, a former cheerleader and model, initially approached a lower court in Kolkata after accusing Shami of adultery and match-fixing in 2018, leading to his temporary suspension by the BCCI until clearance. The alimony saga escalated when a magistrate ordered Rs 10 lakh interim maintenance in 2019, later reduced by higher courts amid appeals. Jahan has repeatedly highlighted Shami's earnings from IPL contracts (Rs 15 crore with Gujarat Titans), BCCI central contracts, endorsements, and assets worth crores, insisting the awarded sum falls short for covering education, healthcare, and daily expenses in line with the standard of living she was accustomed to during marriage.
Shami, currently recovering from injury and eyeing a national comeback, has maintained that the existing payments comply with court directives and accused Jahan of harassment through media trials. His legal team previously argued successful appeals reducing interim amounts, emphasising his financial responsibilities toward family and career uncertainties in sport. The case has drawn public attention due to Shami's heroic performances, including the 2023 World Cup Player of the Tournament award, contrasting with personal turmoil that once threatened his career.

As the matter returns to the apex court, it underscores ongoing challenges in high-profile divorce cases involving celebrity athletes, where income disparities and child welfare dominate proceedings. With responses due soon, the outcome could set precedents for alimony calculations in similar disputes, while Shami focuses on rehabilitation for potential inclusion in upcoming series. The couple, married in 2014, share a daughter born in 2015, amid irreconcilable differences that have played out publicly over seven years.
