Senior Congress leader Sunny Joseph, who represents the Peravoor constituency in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, is preparing to contest the 2026 state elections once again, seeking another term from the politically significant seat in Kannur district. His candidature is expected to be central to the Indian National Congress’s strategy in northern Kerala, where electoral contests between major alliances remain consistently competitive.
Sunny Joseph, a prominent figure in the Indian National Congress (INC) and the current president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), has been a long-standing political presence in the state. He is also regarded as one of the party’s key campaign leaders, playing an active role in organisational and electoral mobilisation across Kerala.
Representing Peravoor, Joseph has secured consecutive victories in the constituency, including the 2016 and 2021 Kerala Assembly elections. In the 2021 contest, he defeated CPI(M) candidate C Raghunathan by a margin of 3,172 votes, reflecting a closely fought electoral landscape in the region. His repeated wins have helped consolidate his position as a strong UDF (United Democratic Front) leader in Kannur district.

Joseph, who hails from Kannur and has a background in law, entered public life through the Indian National Congress and steadily rose through the party ranks. His early professional experience as an advocate is often cited as a factor that shaped his understanding of legislative and governance-related issues. Over the years, he has held several organisational responsibilities within the KPCC, strengthening his influence within the party structure.
As KPCC president, Joseph plays a dual role as both a constituency-level representative and a state-level strategist for the Congress. He is frequently involved in campaign planning and is considered one of the party’s key faces during state-wide elections. His leadership role also places him at the centre of efforts to coordinate between district units and the state leadership.
Peravoor constituency, located in Kannur district, remains a politically sensitive and closely contested region, where the Congress-led United Democratic Front and the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front frequently engage in tight electoral battles. The region is known for its strong party loyalties and high voter participation, making each election a closely watched political contest.
With the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections approaching, Sunny Joseph’s bid for another term is expected to be a significant element in the Congress party’s broader electoral plans in northern Kerala. His campaign will likely focus on continuity, development issues, and consolidating the party’s established voter base in a highly competitive political environment.
