Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Thursday stated that the attainment of full Statehood remains the only durable solution for ensuring smooth and effective administration in the Union Territory of Puducherry. Speaking in the Legislative Assembly while winding up the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the Lieutenant Governor, Mr. Rangasamy underlined that the demand for Statehood has been consistently raised by successive elected governments in the territory over a long period.

The Chief Minister emphasised that the present constitutional arrangement continues to impose structural constraints on the day-to-day functioning of the elected government. He argued that only the elevation of Puducherry to full Statehood would remove these limitations and allow the administration to operate with the autonomy and clarity of responsibility required for efficient governance. The remarks formed part of his formal response at the conclusion of the debate on the Motion of Thanks.

Mr. Rangasamy recalled that the call for Statehood has figured regularly in the political discourse of the Union Territory and has been articulated by elected representatives across different tenures. He presented the demand not as a new or partisan claim but as a long-standing institutional aspiration aimed at strengthening democratic administration and improving the delivery of public services. The Assembly provided the forum for reaffirming this position before the House.

By linking the question of Statehood directly to the practical requirements of smooth administration, the Chief Minister sought to frame the issue in terms of governance outcomes rather than purely political symbolism. He indicated that the existing Union Territory framework, while providing certain constitutional safeguards, falls short of enabling the elected government to exercise the full range of powers necessary for responsive and accountable administration.

The intervention came at the close of a structured discussion on the Motion of Thanks, a customary occasion for the government to set out its broader perspectives on the territory’s administrative and political future. Mr. Rangasamy’s statement therefore served both as a summation of the debate and as a reiteration of the long-held position of successive elected governments in Puducherry.
