In a pressing appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has raised an alarm over a critical fertiliser shortage that threatens the state’s farmers during the vital Kharif season. In a detailed letter, Stalin urged the Central Government to take immediate action to address the shortfall and ensure additional allocations to support the state’s agricultural surge.
Stalin highlighted that between April and August 2025, fertiliser manufacturers delivered only 57% of the Union Government’s allocated supply, resulting in significant deficits: 27,823 metric tonnes of Urea, 15,831 MT of DAP, 12,422 MT of MOP, and 98,623 MT of NPK Complex fertilisers. This shortfall, if unresolved, could jeopardize farmers’ prospects for a robust harvest, especially as Tamil Nadu’s agricultural landscape shows promising growth.
The Chief Minister noted that an early monsoon and ample water storage in major reservoirs have spurred a 10% increase in paddy cultivation, with coverage reaching 5.66 lakh hectares as of September 2025. This expansion has driven a sharp rise in fertiliser demand, amplifying the urgency of the situation. Stalin warned that without prompt intervention, the state’s farmers could face severe distress, undermining the potential for a bumper harvest.

To address the crisis, Stalin requested an additional fertiliser allocation for September: 40,000 MT of Urea, 20,000 MT of DAP, 20,000 MT of MOP, and 40,000 MT of NPK Complex fertilisers. He pressed the Centre to issue urgent directives to fertiliser manufacturers to clear the pending shortfall and meet the new requirements. This, he argued, is essential to support farmers through the ongoing Kharif season and the upcoming Rabi season, ensuring their livelihoods and the state’s agricultural productivity are safeguarded.
The appeal underscores the critical role of timely fertiliser supply in sustaining Tamil Nadu’s agricultural momentum, with Stalin calling for swift action to prevent a crisis that could ripple across the state’s rural economy.
