Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) appears to have secured a working majority in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly after late-stage political negotiations, according to sources, as discussions with Governor R.N. Arlekar continued for the third consecutive day over government formation.
Sources indicate that Vijay now has the support of additional legislators that takes his backing past the 118-seat majority mark required to form government. This reported consolidation includes five Congress MLAs and two MLAs each from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Communist Party of India. If confirmed, this support base would push TVK into a position to stake claim to form the government despite earlier uncertainty.
The Governor and Vijay are scheduled to meet again at 4:30 pm on Friday, marking their third meeting in as many days. Previous discussions reportedly ended without resolution, as Governor Arlekar questioned the strength and stability of Vijay’s claim. According to officials familiar with the meetings, the Governor raised concerns about how a government could function with fluctuating support numbers and sought clarity on coalition backing from other parties.

TVK, which contested its first-ever assembly election, emerged as a major political force by winning 108 of the 234 seats. The result ended the decades-long dominance of the Dravidian majors, DMK and AIADMK, reshaping Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. However, the party fell short of the 118-seat majority threshold, leading to a period of uncertainty and intense post-poll negotiations with smaller parties and independent legislators.
In the latest round of talks, sources say Congress support came with conditions, including an assurance that TVK would not align with parties labelled as “communal forces,” a reference widely understood to mean the Bharatiya Janata Party. This development reportedly helped strengthen Vijay’s numbers, but negotiations with other former DMK allies, particularly the VCK and Left parties, remained complex due to pre-election alliance commitments.
The ongoing political stalemate has turned into a high-stakes negotiation process between the Governor and the TVK leadership, with questions over legitimacy, coalition stability, and procedural approval dominating discussions. In earlier meetings, Governor Arlekar reportedly challenged Vijay on the composition of his support base, asking how governance would be sustained without a clear and stable majority commitment from allied parties.
With another round of discussions scheduled, political observers say the outcome could determine whether Tamil Nadu sees a smooth transition of power or an extended constitutional deadlock. TVK’s rapid rise and fragmented post-election alliances have created one of the most closely watched government formation battles in recent state political history.
