Police on Saturday arrested six people in connection with allegations of cow slaughter without a licence and the sale of beef in public in the Raigachi area of Rajarhat, located on the northern outskirts of Kolkata. The arrests were made after authorities received complaints regarding alleged illegal activities in the area.
According to officials from Rajarhat Police Station, police conducted a raid following reports of open-air beef sales in parts of Rajarhat. The six accused were taken into custody and brought to the police station after being booked under charges related to illegal cow slaughter and the sale of beef without the required licence.
The arrested individuals were produced before the Barasat Sub-Divisional Court on Saturday, where police sought their custody for further investigation. A senior officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate said that a case had been registered and that the investigation into the incident was underway.

Authorities said the action was taken after receiving complaints from residents about alleged violations of licensing rules. Police officials have not disclosed further details about the investigation, including the specific legal provisions invoked or the evidence collected during the raid.
Rajarhat New Town BJP MLA Piyush Kanodia commented on the arrests, stating that illegal activities would not be allowed and urging people to remain calm while police carried out their investigation. He said those involved in unauthorised slaughter and meat sales would face action according to the law.
The arrests have drawn attention to enforcement measures against unlicensed meat sales in the region. Police officials said the matter remains under investigation and further developments will depend on the findings of the ongoing probe.
