Shashi Tharoor has said he will not be able to attend the swearing-in ceremony of VD Satheesan as Kerala’s Chief Minister on Monday due to prior commitments in the United States. The Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram shared the update through a social media post on Friday, explaining that he would be travelling to Boston to deliver the commencement address at the graduation ceremony of his alma mater, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He also said he would participate in the 50th anniversary reunion of his graduating class during the visit.
In his post on X, Shashi Tharoor expressed regret over missing the high-profile political event in Kerala while describing the occasion in the United States as personally significant. “An occasion for celebrating the past in the US even as I look forward to the future in Kerala,” Tharoor wrote, a statement that quickly attracted political attention due to its subtle messaging. The oath-taking ceremony of VD Satheesan is expected to be a major event for the Congress-led United Democratic Front following its electoral success in the recently concluded Kerala Assembly elections.
Despite his absence from the swearing-in ceremony, political observers believe Tharoor’s prominence within the Congress party and Kerala politics has continued to grow steadily in recent months. The Thiruvananthapuram MP, who had previously experienced strained relations with sections of the state Congress leadership, has increasingly moved closer to the party’s central leadership. His active involvement during the election campaign was viewed as a major boost for the Congress-led alliance across several constituencies in the state.

During the assembly election campaign, Shashi Tharoor emerged as one of the most sought-after campaigners for the United Democratic Front. Party candidates across Kerala reportedly competed to secure his presence at rallies and public meetings, particularly in urban constituencies and among younger voters. Travelling extensively from northern to southern Kerala, Tharoor addressed large gatherings where his speeches, known for their polished language and humour, drew considerable public attention and enthusiasm.
Within Congress circles, there is also growing recognition that Tharoor’s political appeal now extends well beyond his parliamentary constituency of Thiruvananthapuram. Party leaders and workers increasingly view him as a nationally recognisable face capable of energising cadres and attracting undecided voters. His strong communication skills, international profile and visibility among educated urban audiences have helped strengthen his standing within the party at a time when Congress is attempting to expand its influence in multiple states.
The swearing-in ceremony of VD Satheesan is expected to formally mark the beginning of a new administration in Kerala after the Congress-led alliance’s victory in the assembly polls. While Tharoor will be absent from the event physically, his recent campaign role and growing political visibility continue to place him among the prominent leaders shaping the Congress party’s future strategy in the state. Political analysts say his evolving role within Kerala politics could become increasingly significant in the coming years.
