A second Uttarakhand Police constable has announced his intention to resign through a video recorded while wearing his official uniform, days after another constable made a similar declaration during a protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. The latest development has prompted disciplinary action, with the Uttarakhand Police suspending the constable for allegedly violating service rules and departmental discipline. The incident has drawn attention to growing discontent among some police personnel and raised concerns over public expressions of grievance by serving officers.

The constable has been identified as Amit Kumar, who is currently posted in Pithoragarh district and had been deployed to Haridwar on July 23 for Kanwar Mela duty. In the video, which surfaced on social media on Thursday, Kumar said he was distressed over the alleged assault on protesters at Jantar Mantar on July 20. He also expressed support for fellow constable Sher Singh and reiterated the demand for a grade pay of Rs 4,600 for Uttarakhand Police personnel. Kumar further stated that he wished to resign from service and appealed for his resignation to be accepted.

Following the circulation of the video, the Pithoragarh Police suspended Kumar with immediate effect. In an official statement, the department said the constable had posted an objectionable video while wearing his police uniform, which violated the standards of discipline, neutrality and conduct expected of serving police personnel. Officials also noted that Kumar had previously served in Rudraprayag before being transferred to Pithoragarh following complaints. According to the police, he had faced departmental action on multiple occasions for alleged indiscipline, negligence of duty and failure to follow official instructions.

Kumaon Range Inspector General of Police Nivedita Kukreti alleged that Kumar had also been named in a criminal case in Haridwar. She claimed that he was accused of involvement in organised criminal activities alongside an associate and alleged gangster Praveen Valmiki, including intimidation of vulnerable individuals and attempts to illegally occupy land. Police said a First Information Report (FIR) had been registered in connection with the case. These allegations remain part of the ongoing legal process.

The incident comes shortly after constable Sher Singh, also posted in Pithoragarh, announced his intention to resign while participating in a protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). Sher Singh had also alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations and demanded better pay for Uttarakhand Police personnel. Commenting on the recent developments, a retired IPS officer expressed concern over serving police personnel airing grievances publicly while in uniform, warning that such actions could undermine discipline within the police force and should be addressed firmly through established institutional mechanisms.
