A schoolboy narrowly escaped a potentially fatal accident on Tuesday morning after an electric pole collapsed onto the road in Ashok Nagar, Kurnool. Live wires from the snapped pole fell dangerously close to the boy, who was on his way to school, but he managed to retreat in time, avoiding serious injury. Residents noted that just a few steps further could have led to a major tragedy.
Officials said the incident occurred following recent drainage works carried out by the Kurnool Municipal Corporation (KMC) in the area. The excavation reportedly weakened the pole, which eventually toppled onto the street, snapping several live wires and creating a hazardous situation for commuters.
The collapse immediately drew the attention of Industries and Food Processing Minister TG Bharath, who instructed authorities to respond swiftly and ensure public safety. Officials rushed to the site, cordoned off the area, and restored safety, preventing further accidents.

KMC Commissioner P Vishwanath confirmed that a preliminary inquiry has been initiated following a complaint from TRANSCO officials. As immediate action, show-cause notices were issued to two KMC officials for alleged negligence in overseeing the drainage and electrical works.
Additionally, a police complaint has been lodged against the contractor, seeking the registration of a criminal case for violating the terms of the contract. Authorities emphasized accountability and warned that negligence in public infrastructure projects would not be tolerated.
The incident has once again highlighted the critical need for safety protocols during infrastructure projects, particularly in residential areas. Officials stressed that routine inspections and proper safety measures are essential to prevent similar life-threatening incidents in the future.
