A shocking attempted robbery and assault was reported from Karnal in Haryana, where an elderly woman was allegedly attacked inside her home by a school van driver. The incident, which took place on Friday at the residential complex of the Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, has sparked outrage after CCTV footage of the assault surfaced online.
According to police and media reports, the accused, identified as Krishnakant, allegedly entered the residence of a scientist’s family within the institute premises and attempted to rob the elderly woman. When she resisted the alleged attempt to snatch her chain, the accused reportedly attacked her and tried to strangle her using a handkerchief. The assault escalated as she was thrown to the floor during the struggle.
The incident was captured on a surveillance camera installed at the residence, showing the sequence of events inside the house. The footage has since gone viral on social media, intensifying public concern over safety within residential institutional complexes. Authorities said the woman’s screams alerted nearby residents, who rushed to the spot.

Neighbours intervened quickly after hearing the commotion and managed to catch the accused before handing him over to the authorities. Police officials later reached the location and took Krishnakant into custody. He was subsequently booked following a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s family.
A case has been registered by local police, and further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and possible motive behind the attack. Officials said the victim is receiving necessary support, and her condition is being monitored after the traumatic incident.
