Comedian Samay Raina turned a formal felicitation ceremony into an impromptu stand-up performance on Wednesday when he was honoured by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The 28-year-old used the occasion to joke about his earlier encounters with the state’s cyber cell arising from controversy surrounding his YouTube show India’s Got Latent. Fadnavis and fellow guests including actors Pankaj Tripathi, Sharad Kelkar and Ashish Vidyarthi were left laughing as Raina recounted the full-circle nature of the moment.

Addressing the chief minister, Raina began by thanking him for the recognition before launching into his routine. He remarked that his history with Maharashtra Cyber stretched back a long time and quipped that 1930 remained a memorable number because calls from the national cybercrime helpline frequently reached him. He added that the Maharashtra Cyber Cell stayed highly active and capable of locating individuals whether they were in the United States or in India. The audience responded with laughter at the comedian’s self-deprecating delivery.

Raina then underlined the irony of the present occasion. He observed that this marked the first instance in which a cyber cell officer had arrived at a comedian’s residence in the morning, escorted him from his home, and this time the purpose was a felicitation rather than an investigation. The remark drew further amusement from those present and neatly framed the contrast between past official attention and the current public honour.

The jokes rested on events from February 2025, when an episode of India’s Got Latent featuring podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia generated widespread outrage. A question posed during the episode concerning parents and sex prompted multiple complaints and FIRs against Allahbadia, Raina and others linked to the programme. Maharashtra Cyber subsequently summoned Raina for questioning. At the time the comedian was in the United States and requested permission to record his statement by video conference, yet the agency required his physical presence in Mumbai.

Raina eventually appeared before the cyber cell for questioning. In the aftermath of the controversy he removed all episodes of India’s Got Latent from YouTube and largely withdrew from public view while the legal proceedings continued. The show itself came to an abrupt halt as a result of the backlash and official scrutiny.

The Mumbai ceremony therefore represented a striking reversal of circumstances for the comedian, who moved from being the subject of a cyber cell investigation to receiving formal recognition from the state’s highest elected official. His decision to address the earlier episode directly through humour allowed the gathering to acknowledge both the past difficulty and the present acknowledgement in a single public moment.
