A Congress gathering in Rajasthan’s Barmer district has drawn attention beyond its stated purpose, with Sachin Pilot appearing alongside prominent Jat leaders Hemaram Chaudhary and Harish Chaudhary. The event in Dhorimanna was organised to unveil a statue of former sarpanch and farmer leader Gordhana Ram Vishnoi. However, the public appearance of the three Congress leaders has fuelled speculation about changing political equations within the party ahead of future state elections.

The optics of Harish Chaudhary, the Baytu MLA and a prominent Jat leader, driving Pilot to the event, with senior Congress leader Hemaram Chaudhary also travelling with them, added to the political significance of the gathering. The event brought together representatives of the Bishnoi and Jat communities, both influential in western Rajasthan. The Jat community has a substantial presence across districts including Barmer, Bikaner and the Shekhawati region, while the Bishnoi community is particularly concentrated in parts of western Rajasthan.

Caste arithmetic has long played an important role in Rajasthan elections. Jats account for a significant share of the state’s population and have historically been an important Congress constituency, although their political preferences have shifted over time. The BJP’s decision to extend OBC reservation to Jats in 1999 was an important development in the community’s political relationship with the party. Meanwhile, Bishnoi voters, because of their geographic concentration and strong community identity, can carry considerable electoral influence in closely contested constituencies.

The Jat community has also had a longstanding political grievance over the absence of a Jat chief minister in Rajasthan despite the community’s influence across a large number of Assembly constituencies. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who belongs to the Mali community, has maintained strong political support among several social groups, including minority voters, but his relationship with sections of the Jat leadership has periodically been a source of political tension. Against this backdrop, Pilot’s growing visibility among western Rajasthan leaders could offer the Congress an alternative social coalition.

Harish Chaudhary’s remarks at the Dhorimanna gathering added another layer to the emerging political divide. Referring indirectly to Gehlot’s well-known comments about the chief ministerial chair, Chaudhary highlighted Hemaram Chaudhary’s decision to step away from political office. The shift is notable because Harish Chaudhary had previously supported Gehlot during the 2020 political conflict involving Gehlot and Pilot. His current alignment with Pilot therefore indicates a change in internal party dynamics, although it remains too early to determine whether the association will develop into a formal political arrangement.

The absence of senior Barmer Congress leader Mewaram Jain, considered close to Gehlot, was also noticed at the gathering. Both Gehlot and Pilot have largely remained away from the ongoing urban local body elections, leaving much of the campaign and ticket distribution to the state and local leadership. Pilot also discouraged supporters when they raised slogans projecting him as the next chief minister. Despite the restrained public posture, the Dhorimanna gathering suggests that competing leadership equations and caste alignments could become increasingly important as Rajasthan’s next Assembly election approaches.
