In a dramatic development following the Rashtriya Janata Dal’s (RJD) heavy loss in the Bihar Assembly elections, party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter, Rohini Acharya, has declared that she is quitting politics and disowning her family. The announcement came through a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, adding to the turmoil already surrounding the Yadav family and its party.
Acharya wrote that her decision came after being asked by senior RJD leader Sanjay Yadav – a close aide of her brother and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav – to step away from politics. Her post stated, “I’m quitting politics and I’m disowning my family... This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do... and I’m taking all the blame.” The statement sparked widespread speculation about internal divisions within one of Bihar’s most influential political families.
Rohini Acharya, who donated a kidney to her father Lalu Prasad Yadav in 2022, had been expressing discontent with the party’s direction in recent months. Reports suggested she was unhappy with the expulsion of her elder brother, Tej Pratap Yadav, who went on to launch his own outfit, the Janshakti Janata Dal. Tej Pratap’s new party failed to win any seats in the 2025 Bihar elections, including from Mahua, the constituency he contested.

The family tensions appeared to deepen after the RJD’s poor performance, with the Mahagathbandhan alliance securing barely 35 out of 243 seats compared to the NDA’s 202. Acharya’s social media activity before the polls reflected her fluctuating emotions—ranging from criticism to open support. In earlier posts, she had challenged those spreading “lies and propaganda” about her, insisting on her integrity while defending her father’s legacy.
Despite signs of reconciliation before the elections, including birthday wishes to Tejashwi praising his leadership, Acharya’s latest statement marks a clear shift. Political observers believe her decision may further fragment the Yadav family’s influence within the RJD at a time when the party faces an identity crisis after one of its worst-ever electoral showings.
