Union Minister Kiran Rijiju emphasized that every citizen deserves security after a violent mob attacked BJP lawmakers in north Bengal. The incident, which targeted Maldaha Uttar MP Khagen Murmu and Siliguri MLA Sankar Ghosh during their visit to the flood and landslide-hit Nagrakata area in Jalpaiguri district, has raised serious concerns. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has demanded a report from the West Bengal government, threatening action under the Privilege Motion if delayed.
Rijiju visited the disaster-stricken region alongside Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and Darjeeling MP Raju Bista to assess damage from recent landslides and floods that claimed at least 32 lives. "I’m here on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to meet affected families and report on the devastation," Rijiju stated.
Adhikari alleged possible involvement of terror group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in the attack, citing the proximity to the India-Bangladesh border. "The TMC is sheltering Jihadi elements, and we cannot rule out JMB’s role," he claimed, accusing the state government of enabling demographic changes through Bangladeshi infiltrators. Adhikari vowed to escalate the matter to the Calcutta High Court and said the BJP has filed an FIR, with the National Commission for Scheduled Castes also taking action.

The BJP plans to compensate families of disaster victims with Rs 2 lakh each. Adhikari warned of intensified protests, stating, "Our response begins tomorrow, with BJP activists and citizens already mobilizing."
Rijiju, Adhikari, and Bista also reviewed rescue and relief efforts by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Rijiju stressed the need for better coordination among agencies and praised the jawans’ efforts in ongoing operations.
