Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Friday condemned ongoing speculations about a leadership role for Sunetra Pawar in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), following the tragic death of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash. Speaking to reporters in Thane, Raut described it as “inhuman” to discuss political positions while the family is still mourning.
Raut, a prominent Shivsena (UBT) MP, highlighted the emotional state of Sunetra Pawar, saying her “eyes are still welling” and that any talk of political appointments at this time reflects a lack of empathy. His remarks came amid discussions by several NCP leaders pushing for a state ministerial berth or even the Deputy Chief Minister position for Sunetra Pawar.
Addressing the broader political context, Raut also took aim at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), suggesting that if the party truly respects Ajit Pawar, it should consider withdrawing ₹70,000 Crore scam charges linked to the irrigation department. He implied that such legal actions would demonstrate genuine goodwill toward the late leader and his family.

Raut’s comments underscore the sensitive atmosphere in Maharashtra politics following the sudden loss of a senior NCP figure. Ajit Pawar’s death has triggered widespread shock across the state, with leaders from multiple parties expressing condolences while navigating the complex political implications of his absence.
Observers note that Raut’s statement serves both as a call for compassion toward Sunetra Pawar and as a pointed political message toward rival parties. By emphasizing humanity over immediate political maneuvering, he seeks to shape the narrative around mourning rather than opportunistic leadership speculation.
As discussions continue within the NCP regarding succession and potential cabinet reshuffles, party members and allies are walking a delicate line between honoring Ajit Pawar’s legacy and addressing governance needs. Raut’s strong stance reflects the broader tension between political strategy and respect for personal loss in the aftermath of high-profile tragedies.
