Former Pakistan cricket captain Rashid Latif has famously compared Indian batting stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to football icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, highlighting their immense impact on the game. Speaking recently, Latif emphasized that the decision on whether both will feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup lies with Indian team management but strongly believes that at least one should be included to strengthen the side.
Latif underscored that despite India having a wealth of cricketing talent, the experience and class of Rohit and Kohli remain irreplaceable, especially in the longer 50-over format of the game. “One-day cricket is a long-format game, unlike T20s. Even if not both, at least one of them must be part of the team,” he said, pointing out how cricket selections often see deserving players missing out due to squad dynamics and form fluctuations.
Recollecting the memorable innings the duo played against Australia in an ODI earlier this year, Latif praised their ability to turn matches around. Rohit’s unbeaten 121 and Kohli’s 74 not out had guided India to a comfortable nine-wicket victory in a chase of 237 runs. Such performances, Latif said, are a testament to their enduring class and ability to change the course of a game even after long breaks.

Comparing their longevity with football legends still active on the pitch, Latif said, “Ronaldo is still playing, Messi is still playing — and these two are India’s Ronaldo and Messi.” He stressed that their cricketing skills and match-winning abilities should never be underestimated as India prepares for major tournaments in the coming years.
With rising stars like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and others waiting in the wings, the former Pakistan skipper acknowledged the complex dynamics of team selection but insisted the seniors bring the invaluable blend of technique, temperament, and leadership essential for World Cup success.
