Actor-turned-politician Ramesh Pisharody has announced that he will step away from his career in cinema and stage performances after securing a decisive victory in the Palakkad Assembly constituency, marking a full transition into public service. The Congress candidate won his electoral debut by a margin of 13,147 votes, signaling strong voter support for his entry into politics.
Following the announcement of results, Pisharody said he would dedicate the next five years entirely to serving the people of Palakkad. He stated that his focus would now be on governance and constituency development rather than his previous engagements in entertainment. Known for his long-standing presence in Malayalam cinema and stage comedy, he described the shift as a personal commitment to public life over performance arts.
The Palakkad contest drew considerable attention due to its diverse lineup of candidates. The Bharatiya Janata Party fielded senior leader Shobha Surendran, while the Left-backed independent candidate N. M. R. Razak added further competitiveness to the race. Pisharody, however, entered politics as a relative outsider, relying on personal popularity and direct voter engagement rather than traditional political machinery.

His nomination came at a time when the Congress was seeking a strong and relatable candidate after earlier instability in the constituency. The party had briefly relied on Youth Congress leader Rahul Mammkootathil, whose short tenure ended abruptly, prompting the search for a fresh face. Pisharody’s selection was seen as a strategic move to connect with voters through a well-known public personality.
Despite initial doubts over his lack of political experience, Pisharody’s campaign gradually gained momentum. His outreach focused on accessibility, humility, and service-oriented messaging rather than aggressive political rhetoric. This approach resonated with a broad section of voters, helping him secure a comfortable win in his debut election.
Reacting to his victory, Pisharody said the result reflected the core strength of democracy and the importance of respecting the will of the people. He thanked voters, party workers, and supporters for their trust and commitment. Emphasising his decision to leave behind his entertainment career, he said he was ready to embrace a simpler life dedicated to public service, where his performance would now be measured by governance outcomes rather than applause.
