A major healthcare scam has come to light in Rajasthan, where authorities uncovered fraudulent activities under the Rajasthan Government Health Scheme (RGHS), a flagship initiative meant to provide free medical services to citizens and government employees. The Special Operations Group (SOG) launched an investigation after noticing irregularities in claims, which ultimately revealed a well-organised network involving doctors and a private lab operator syphoning off crores of rupees from the state exchequer.
According to officials, the accused allegedly misused the scheme by prescribing unnecessary diagnostic tests and generating fake medical reports. These fabricated documents were then used to claim reimbursements from the government, inflating bills and diverting public funds. The fraud points to systemic loopholes in monitoring and verification processes within the scheme, raising concerns about accountability and oversight in public healthcare programmes.
The police have arrested two key individuals in connection with the case: Dr Kamal Kumar Agrawal, an orthopaedics associate professor at a government hospital in Sikar, and Dr Banwari Lal, a private laboratory operator. Investigators believe the duo worked in coordination to create fake prescriptions and test reports, enabling repeated and illegal reimbursement claims over a period of time.

Authorities suspect that more individuals could be involved in the racket, and the probe is ongoing to trace the full extent of the fraud. Officials are also examining past claims made under the scheme to identify similar patterns of misuse. The case highlights how critical welfare schemes, designed to support public health, can be exploited if strict auditing mechanisms are not enforced.
The SOG has indicated that stricter checks, digital tracking of prescriptions, and enhanced scrutiny of diagnostic claims may be introduced to prevent such frauds in the future. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for transparency and robust governance in implementing large-scale public welfare programmes.
